stories with heart CK Hui Stair Challenge 2018

The Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation and the CK Hui Heart Centre celebrated this February's Heart Month in red style. Recap all the events and find out who won the 2018 CK Hui Stair Challenge!

The CK Hui Heart Centre celebrated this February’s Heart Month in red style hosting multiple events throughout the month. A workshop on cardiac health and diet, free fitness classes for all Royal Alexandra Hospital staff and chocolatey treats on Valentine’s Day made February a month to remember. Not only were we able to serve the staff at the hospital but the CK Hui Team was able to host two blood pressure clinics at this year’s Chinese New Year Celebrations at West Edmonton Mall and Family Day Health Fair at Millwoods Town Centre. In addition, the public was well informed about heart attacks and the amazing work done at the CK Hui Heart Centre. In addition to all of the amazing learning and exercise events that were held a challenge was also created. The Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation hosted the 2nd annual staff CK Hui Stair Challenge. Teams comprised of maximum five members to take to the stairs and increase their overall cardiovascular activity.  All together 50 teams joined the 2018 challenge. The teams combined to make over 200 participants in the 2018 CK Hui Stair Challenge raising almost $2000.

The competition was fierce and the creativity was memorable! Names like Knee'd For Speed, Finger Prickin' Good, The CABG rolls and the StairBears were just a few of the imaginative team names. Throughout the month people used the stairs as their everyday routine, consciously making the effort to avoid the elevator, using their lunch hour for climbing and coming in early before work to climb the infamous Robbins Pavilion glass staircase. With that said the total number of stairs climbed and documented was 1,981,777 over a 2 week period!!

Every participant was rewarded with a CK Hui Water Bottle for their hard work and dedication. The top team won a free two month membership and a personal training session courtesy of Anytime Fitness Kingsway. The most creative team name received a gift card to Sportchek, and the top fundraising team received a gift card to Freshii! Just when we thought the prizes were finished, a bonus draw was done for all registered teams and received a 3 month plus membership to YMCA.
