Stories of HopeA New Era for Heart Health at the Lois Hole Hospital for Women
Posted on: Jul 02, 2025Join us in celebrating the support that has led to the acquisition of a new ECG unit for the Lois Hole Hospital for Women!

The Lois Hole Hospital for Women has long been committed to providing the highest standard of care for women in the Edmonton community and beyond. Since its inception, it has done incredible work as the only dedicated women’s hospital in the province.
But, as the number of patients the hospital serves every day continues to grow, the need for more equipment grows with it.
Until now, the Lois Hole Hospital did not have its own Electrocardiograph (ECG), one of the most effective tools for assessing heart health. For women who face symptoms that often differ from the more widely recognized and studied signs in men, quick and accurate cardiac screening is crucial. So, when women came to the hospital presenting concerning symptoms—such as irregular heartbeats, shortness of breath, or unexplained fatigue—staff would need to borrow this life-saving equipment from other departments at the Royal Alexandra Hospital. While this represented only one extra step in the process, every second counts when it comes to heart care.
Thanks to the support of our community, the process for diagnosing women’s heart health is now more efficient than ever.
What started as a collection of generous donations from individuals wanting to help make a difference for the Lois Hole Hospital (including an inspiring response through direct mail) was capped off by an incredible contribution from the Sandra Schmirler Foundation.
The Sandra Schmirler Foundation's donation of $24,500+ played a pivotal role in completing the funding to acquire an ECG unit for the Lois Hole Hospital, covering an incredible amount of the costs required for the technology. Because of the selfless support of the community and the amazing contribution from the Sandra Schmirler Foundation, this acquisition has come to fruition, ensuring that patients at the Lois Hole Hospital will face fewer delays in diagnostics.
The generosity shown by the community is helping to ensure every woman at the Lois Hole Hospital for Women receives the care they deserve. The addition of a dedicated ECG and portable trolley will allow staff to bring critical cardiac testing directly to the patients who need it most, when they need it most.
Thank you for continuing to help save lives.
