Stories With HeartThe Heartbeats of Care at the CK Hui Heart Centre

Posted on: Feb 01, 2024

February is Heart Month and we are featuring the world-class heart care at the CK Hui Heart Centre, within the Royal Alexandra Hospital.

The CK Hui Heart Centre is Western Canada’s high-volume, high-performance heart hospital.

Located in the Royal Alexandra Hospital, the CK Hui is a powerhouse when it comes to coronary intervention.

It opened in 2011, providing excellence in cardiac treatment to patients in northern Alberta and the Territories, as well as northern Saskatchewan and British Columbia—an area equal to one-third of Canada's land mass.

As we mark Heart Month this February, we are proud to share more about the impact of the CK Hui Heart Centre—changing lives and changing the future of heart-related treatment. Below is just a snapshot of this work that creates the heartbeats of care.

And YOU—our donors—make these heartbeats possible. Your dollars change lives. This Heart Month, please give generously.

Life-Saving Care: Patient Stories

Charles Park

When longstanding chest pains became unbearable for Ponoka-area farmer Charles Park, he was fortunate to be connected to the CK Hui Heart Centre. He credits cardiologists there with saving his life, as they opened two blocked arteries and preventing the need for open heart surgery. With help from donors like you, the CK Hui Heart Centre is able to make life-saving interventions for thousands of people each year just like Charles.

Michelle Shaw

While driving home, Michelle’s vision suddenly went black and she lost consciousness, resulting in a devastating car crash that almost killed her. Thanks to the quick action of a stranger who called 911, Michelle received emergency care that saved her life. Michelle spent a week in the Cardiac Care Unit (CCU) in a coma, followed by a month of rehabilitative care learning how to communicate, walk, and live once again. She says she now calls the CK Hui home and depends on them for continued support and care.

Betty Swanson

A retired municipal administrator, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Betty experienced shoulder pain one evening and wasn’t sure if she was having a heart attack. She trusted her instincts and was taken directly to the catheterization lab in the CK Hui Heart Centre, where she had emergency surgery to have stents placed in three arteries.
