Saving Sight: Meeting the Urgent Challenge of Vision Loss

Vision loss and eye diseases affect millions of Canadians—posing one of the greatest, yet often overlooked, public health challenges of our time. Left untreated, some eye diseases can even lead to life-threatening complications. The need for innovation and timely access to care is more urgent than ever.

Early intervention can prevent or treat approximately 75% of cases of vision loss and blindness. When someone loses their sight, it’s not just their independence that’s impacted—it’s their ability to engage in the everyday moments that define life, from driving to preparing a meal for their family.

The Need

The Eye Institute of Alberta is at the forefront of advancing research and delivering comprehensive vision care. As the only hospital-based, full-service eye treatment centre in northern Alberta, it is a lifeline for patients across the region.

However, demand has skyrocketed. Originally built to care for 12,000 patients annually, the clinic now serves more than 45,000 patients each year—drawing individuals from Western Canada and the northern territories. To continue delivering critical services and leading the future of eye care, we urgently need your support.

How Your Support Will Help

Your donation to the Eye Institute of Alberta Innovation and Patient Care Fund will drive:

  • Groundbreaking research to push the boundaries of treatment
  • State-of-the-art equipment acquisitions that enhance diagnosis and care
  • Expanded services to ensure all patients, regardless of background, can access world-class vision care

The Eye Institute is already making remarkable progress. Thanks to the generosity of donors, we are now home to Alberta’s only CLARUS 700 Ultra-Wide Imaging Camera—a revolutionary diagnostic tool that improves patient comfort, sharpens diagnostic precision, and accelerates treatment timelines.

Additionally, with donor support, we have installed a new fundus camera at the Royal Alexandra Hospital’s emergency department. This vital device allows doctors to detect ocular strokes faster, preserving vision—and in many cases, saving lives.

What Your Donation Will Fund

  • Research & Innovation: Funding will allow the Eye Institute to continue its leading-edge research in vision science and ophthalmology. This research has the potential to not only improve eye care in Alberta but to shape the future of eye treatment across Canada.
  • State-of-the-Art Equipment: Contributions will help purchase life-saving diagnostic tools, such as the CLARUS 700 Ultra-Wide Imaging Camera, as well as expand access to advanced imaging and diagnostic systems.
  • Access to Care for All: Donations will ensure that patients from all socio-economic backgrounds have access to high-quality eye care, regardless of their financial circumstances.

Your donation will directly improve the lives of thousands of Canadians who rely on the Eye Institute of Alberta for their vision care, every year. Join us in supporting this crucial work—together, we can help protect the gift of sight for future generations.
