Build a Legacy

Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation Bequests

A bequest in support of healthcare is a gift to the entire community.

Through a bequest in your will, you have the opportunity to build a legacy. A bequest in support of healthcare can benefit thousands of lives by supporting compassionate, innovative patient care at the Royal Alexandra Hospital or one of its centres of excellence.

Speaking of Bequests

The Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation recently hosted a lecture on Wills and Estate Planning delivered by guest speaker Joyce Burnett. “I loved Joyce. Her talk was so helpful to people regardless of their level of familiarity, whether you were an individual with a young family or a person who has already reached retirement stage. It was equally useful. Joyce Burnett was fantastic and so knowledgeable.” – Myrene Couves, Parkland County, Alberta. Click here to read the full story.

“I work with individuals, couples and families who are contemplating their wills and estate plans — creating some for the first time or revising an existing one. I answer questions and provide information about how easy it is to build a legacy that shows your concern for what matters most: the health of your loved ones and the health of your community.” — Terry Tobin, Senior Development Officer

About Bequests

What is a bequest?

A bequest is the most common type of future or "planned" gift. It is a gift made in your will that can help express your wishes and interests. It may be a specific sum of money, a particular asset (e.g. shares or investments), or a portion of your estate. With careful planning, a legacy gift such as a bequest may allow you to make a much larger gift than otherwise possible, and help to minimize taxes for your estate.

How do I include a bequest in my will?

The easiest way to include a bequest in your will is with the help of your lawyer. We can supply suggested bequest wording for your will so your gift will be used as you intend. The Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation staff is pleased to discuss options and opportunities with you.

The best way to ensure that your charitable plans reflect your personal situation and long-term goals is to consult your legal, financial or income tax advisor.

Four Great Reasons

Four great reasons to include the Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation in your will:

  1. A planned gift, as opposed to a gift given now, has the chief advantage of not affecting your current financial resources.
  2. We can help ensure that your will is worded correctly to clarify your intentions. This will ensure your gift is used as you intend and directed to the area you have chosen to support. For example, you can support a specific department at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, such as cardiology, or support a particular research fund, such as ovarian cancer.
  3. When the good news of gifts such as yours is shared with our healthcare and research professionals, they are inspired. Your generosity not only encourages medical staff but motivates others to make their own commitment.
  4. Your experience and knowledge of the Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation's work will deepen through regular updates on areas of interest to you. You will be able to meet the President of the Foundation, top hospital administrators, and medical staff who will keep you informed about the latest achievements and discoveries at the Hospital. Your membership in our Legacy Builders' Society will also mean invitations to exclusive events if you choose to attend.

Sample Wording for Your Wills

The following wording for your will may be printed to share with your lawyer, or retain it for the right moment.

Our official name and address:

Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation
10240 Kingsway NW, Edmonton, AB T5H 3V9
Canadian Charitable Registration Number: 11912 6217 RR0001

A general bequest designates a certain dollar amount of property, usually cash, to the charity you select.

Example: "I give to the Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation the sum of $10,000.00 for its general purposes and greatest needs."

A specific bequest directs that the Foundation is to receive a particular asset:

Example: "I give to the Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation 500 shares of XYZ stock for its general purposes and greatest needs."

A residual bequest designates for the Foundation all, or a portion, of whatever remains after all debts, taxes, expenses and other bequests have been paid.

Example: "I give to the Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation fifty percent (50 percent) of the rest, residue and remainder of my estate for its general purposes and greatest needs."

A contingent bequest takes effect only under certain conditions:

Example: "In the event my wife does not survive me, I give to the Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation the sum of.... for its general purposes and greatest needs."

“When we became aware of what others have done for our hospital and for our community with their estate plans, we were both deeply moved, and we followed their example. We hope that by coming forward with our own plans that we can encourage others to do the same.” — Dr. Thomas and Melanie Nakatsui

Giving Thanks

The Legacy Builders' Society acknowledges passionate community support for the Royal Alexandra Hospital. We pay tribute to those who remember the Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation in their wills or through another form of planned gift. We take great care and pride in acknowledging and celebrating our Donors. However, Donors of bequests and other planned gifts unfortunately go unrecognized while they are alive if the Foundation is not made aware of their commitment.

When you inform us of your intentions you will become a member of our Legacy Builders' Society and will receive a commemorative pin and other recognition from the Foundation's President and CEO. Legacy Builders' Society members' names are listed on a prominent Donor Wall at the Royal Alexandra Hospital and published in our annual Honour Roll publication. Members are invited to exclusive events throughout the year.

Our Donors also have the option of being thanked privately.
