The Lois Hole Hospital for Women is a medical centre of excellence providing a vast array of obstetrical and gynecological services in Alberta for women's medical care and surgical procedures. The hospital has six operating rooms dedicated to women for obstetrics and gynecological procedures. Each operating room is designed specifically for women’s health procedures and is equipped with state-of-the-art digital operating room technology and instrumentation.

As a national leader in the care for patients with high-risk pregnancies, labour and deliveries, the Lois Hole Hospital for Women offers specialized inpatient and outpatient care for these women. Multiple labour and delivery rooms include two that contain infant resuscitation areas to provide the most advanced care. This leading edge facility delivers over 7,500 babies every year.

All services provided at the Lois Hole Hospital for Women fall under the umbrella of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The Lois Hole Hospital for Women is extremely proud to be home to the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry Obstetrics and Gynecology Department.

A culture of continuing growth and education can be found throughout the hospital. The Women & Children’s Health Research InstituteWCHRI Small bird (WCHRI) is the only research institute in Canada and one of the few in the world, to focus on women’s, children’s and perinatal health. WCHRI is a partnership between the University of Alberta and Alberta Health Services with the Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation acting as one of its major funding partners. The Lois Hole Hospital for women is proud to be the home to one of two research hubs for WCHRI and the exceptional research happening at the hospital continues to grow each year.

The Department of Obstetrics covers an extensive suite of services for women. 

  • Antepartum and Postpartum care
  • Labour and Delivery care 
  • Maternal Fetal Medicine - offering care for women with high risk pregnancies  
  • Maternal Heart Health - care for pregnant women with heart conditions
  • Fetal Heart - specialized care for high risk cardiac pregnancies 
  • Obstetric Medicine - expert management of women with high risk medical needs  of pregnancy
  • Reproductive Mental Health Program - support and resources to assist patients and their families with mental health issues related to the reproductive life cycle including antepartum depression, menopause  and bereavement related to infant loss.
  • Early Pregnancy Loss – assessment, care and support for patients and families faced with an early pregnancy loss
  • Adolescent Pregnancy – resources, care and support for pregnant teens
  • Prenatal classes

Gynecological Services include:

  • General gynecological assessments, procedures and care
  • Gynecological Oncology - specializing in cancers of the female reproductive system, including ovarian cancer, uterine cancer, vaginal cancer, cervical cancer, and vulvar cancer.
  • Colposcopy Clinic - providing diagnostic testing and procedures including colposcopies, LEEP (loop electrosurgical excision procedure), biopsies and laser treatments.
  • Allard Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer Clinic (HBOC) - the only clinic of its kind in Alberta offers assessments, surveillance education, support, and follow up for women who have a high risk of hereditary breast or ovarian cancer Urogynecology – a national leader in the treatment of incontinence, the Lois Hole Hospital for Women offers highly specialized training in surgical and non-surgical treatment of pelvic floor and urogynecological conditions.
  • Chronic Pelvic Pain Program - education, assessment, care and counselling for patients
  • Mature Women’s Health services - care to women in perimenopause and menopause with symptoms that affect their quality of life.

Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility Clinic

  • For couples who are struggling with reproductive issues or infertility the clinic provides services to assist them on their journey to conceive. Helping hundreds of patients every year impacts so many lives on the journey to grow a family.
