About the Eye Institute of Alberta

When your eye sight is in jeopardy, the Eye Institute of Alberta at the Royal Alexandra Hospital is there to help.

The Ophthalmology team at the Royal Alexandra Hospital’s Eye Institute of Alberta assists more than 45,000 patients each year - three times its planned capacity when the facility opened in 1996. As the only hospital based comprehensive eye treatment centre in northern Alberta, the Eye Institute of Alberta treats patients from across western Canada and the three territories.

The team delivers excellence in the care and treatment of conditions that range from simple infections to disorders that cause blindness. The Eye Institute of Alberta has evolved from a space for clinical care to an important venue for research and clinical trials. It is also emerging as an important training facility, providing vital experience for the next generation of ophthalmologists.

Over the last two decades, the demand for specialized patient care at the Eye Institute of Alberta has grown at an incredible rate. The dedicated team at the Eye Institute of Alberta continues to provide the very best in patient care, but in order to maintain the truly world class eye care that Edmonton and northern Alberta deserve, additional community investment is required.

“The Eye Institute of Alberta is northern Alberta’s hub for all things ophthalmology related. Strengthen that hub, and you strengthen care all over the province.” – Dr. Karim Damji, Chief of Ophthalmology at the Royal Alexandra Hospital
