The Multicultural Heart Health Program is an innovative information campaign benefitting the diverse populations of our city and designed to increase knowledge of heart disease and stroke.

Through community events and public lectures, staff from the CK Hui Heart Centre are reaching out to communities in Edmonton, providing useful knowledge on heart health and how to prevent heart disease in both the young and old.

The first phase of the Multicultural Heart Health Program was the Chinese Heart Health Initiative in 2009. The Chinese community were very receptive to the lectures, free clinics, and various events that were undertaken. Phase two of the Multicultural Heart Health Program is the South Asian Heart Health Initiative.

"As cardiologists treating heart disease we can usually only help one patient at a time," explains Dr. Sudheer Sharma, the CK Hui Heart Centre's lead for the South Asian Heart Health Initiative. "But when we educate people about heart health and encourage healthy lifestyles, we help the whole population. This is why my colleagues and I are committed to the Multicultural Heart Health Awareness Program, which aims to help communities take charge of their own health."
