At the Royal Alexandra Hospital health care workers of the future are training today. Soon, thanks to the Robbins Foundation Canada and strong support from the RAH Medical Staff Society, the high-tech, auditorium that accommodates 190 students and allows remote learning from other areas of the province and northern territories will play a major role in their training.

The new state-of-the-art Learning Centre, an important component of the Robbins Pavilion on the Royal Alexandra Hospital campus, will also build a solid foundation for continuing education, promote a culture of intellectual curiosity and help meet the demands for additional clinical research and ideas to enhance patient care.

“We feel a deep sense of obligation to the patients we serve, to this region and to this province as leaders in health care delivery,” says Dr. Mark Joffe, a physician at the Royal Alexandra Hospital and an early supporter of the Learning Centre. “Our fundraising efforts began with a campaign to sell seats in the new 190-seat auditorium. Things started slowly but gained momentum once preliminary announcements were made that generous donors had come forward, shared our vision for the future of the Royal Alexandra Hospital, and whose generous gifts would ensure that our Learning Center would be built.”

Joffe says that the majority of seats sold to date in the future auditorium of the Robbins Pavilion Learning Center have been bought by medical staff, hospital administration, and staff of the Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation. The new Learning Center also includes several inter-connected classrooms, linked to each other by digital and video-conferencing technology, and to operating theatres at the Royal Alexandra. Even more exciting, these classrooms will eventually be linked to other learning sites around the world. The new Learning Center in the Robbins Pavilion will become:

  •  The center for professional development and continuing education for all the dedicated health care workers on this site;

  •  A new home for the many health information programs put on for public education at the Royal Alexandra Hospital;

  •  The home to our two annual named lectureships: the Mary Jo Huey-Robbins Nursing Lectureship and the J. Alan Gilbert Lectureship;

  •  A recognized centre for offering small-to-medium size conferences for the education of healthcare workers from all disciplines;

  •  A showcase for the accomplishments and innovative ideas that are emerging at the Royal Alexandra Hospital.

  •  Our new Learning Centre will play a key role in our professional lives and will be vital in supporting the physicians and the staff of the Royal Alexandra to remain at the forefront of our fields and to strengthen our role as leaders in health care,” says Joffe.
