Lois Hole's Legacy of Hope"Having this new expansion named after me is a tremendous honour and a great thrill. Because to me, the Royal Alex has long represented the power of hope." - Lois Hole, Then-Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, speaking at the November 16, 2004 hospital naming ceremony. |

Lois Hole epitomized what the Lois Hole Hospital for Women aims to be. Everywhere she went our former Lieutenant Governor brought dignity, kindness, a progressive spirit, a nurturing nature, a wonderful ability to speak honestly from the heart. Most importantly, she brought hope. "Today, the Royal Alex and the people of Alberta have provided us with a new source of hope, especially for women," she told the crowd gathered for the hospital's naming ceremony on Nov. 16, 2004. "My hope is that when people come to this new hospital and see my name, they're going to have a little extra hope-that real, uplifting hope-that things will turn out okay. They'll remember how I always tried to be kind to people, and they'll know that the doctors and nurses and support staff working in this hospital will be doing their best to be kind to you, too." The Lois Hole Hospital will be the region's only tertiary or high-risk care centre for obstetrics and gynecology. It is a hub of specialized expertise accepting complex cases from the Northwest Territories and beyond, particularly female reproductive issues, pregnancy and birth. All women needing care will be equally welcome and will be served with respect. Indeed, Lois Hole's love for the hospital that will bear her name grew from the compassion with which it cared for her family.
"Our new women's hospital is being named in honour of someone who embodies our most cherished values: The search for knowledge, a practical hand and a kind heart." - Dale Sheard, Vice Chair, Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation |
