The Women's Health Program the tertiary referral center for Northern and Central Alberta and is home to Alberta's only Obstetrical Intensive Care Unit and dedicated Women's Operating Theatres. The Program specializes in gynecology, obstetrics, prenatal care, reproductive health and infertility.
In addition to the Capital Health Region the Program provides services to Northern Alberta as well as adjacent areas in BC, Saskatchewan and the Arctic. As the regional leader in Women's Health, the program strives to ensure that women receive optimal care in a family-focused setting by accessing the latest advances in medical research and technology and by attracting the best health care professionals
The Obstetrical Unit is one of the busiest in Western Canada where each year approximately 4,200 women have their babies and another 600 are hospitalized for high-risk pregnancies. Sixty percent of women in the region having twins or triplets give birth at this Hospital. To ensure the best possible care for mother and child before, during and after the birth, a High Risk Perinatology Clinic works closely with the Hospital's Obstetrical Unit and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
The Women's Health Program houses the Perinatal Clinical Research Centre where researchers from the University of Alberta faculties of Medicine and Dentistry, Nursing, and Rehabilitation Medicine work together to investigate the complexities of pregnancy, birth and early childhood development. As well, undergraduate and postgraduate students from the University of Alberta Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology participate in the care of patients as well as a wide range of scientific and clinical research projects.
The Women's Health Urogynecology Program is a national leader that provides state-of-the-art medical and surgical care for women with urinary incontinence and other related conditions. Another subspecialty is Gynecology Oncology which provides inpatient surgery while, in partnership with the Cross Cancer Institute, comprehensive diagnostic and treatment services are made available for women with gynecologic cancers.
